CyberLink today announced the winners of the “AI Meets Beauty Challenge”. The Challenge, hosted by CyberLink Corp., Perfect Corp. and National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan), illustrates a real-life smart retail scenario – using AI to identify a beauty care item from an image of a product snapped anywhere in the real world. It attracted 97 teams from 13 countries, and after months of intense competition, four teams were honored at the ACM Multimedia 2018 (ACMMM2018) conference that took place October 22-26 in Seoul, South Korea. The VCA team from South Korea, which achieved a mAP (mean Average Precision) score of 0.577567, won the first prize. The other winners are the GAN and WISLAB teams from the Guangdong University of Technology, and the CISIP team from the University of Malaya.
Each team was asked to perform AI training using a merchandise photo dataset of half a million items (Perfect-500K dataset) from major online stores and beauty brands. The trained AI model had to match and recognize the exact products in Perfect-500K, when analyzing photos of beauty and personal care item. The AI Meets Beauty Challenge demonstrates a real-life scenario of how AI can enhance the shopping experience at online, offline and smart stores.
“Artificial intelligence has been driving some of the most important technological breakthroughs in recent years and, by integrating with IoT infrastructures, AIoT will transform shopping for decades to come,” said Dr. Jau Huang, CEO of CyberLink. “Through this AI challenge, we wish to inspire developers around the world to create practical AI-driven solutions and fully enable smart retail.”
