Earlier this week, New York mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city’s planned investment in Sunset Park, Brooklyn- a complex at Bush Terminal dedicated to New York’s garment and film industry. The Made in New York complex, part of the Sunset Park District Plan, led by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), is expected to open in 2020, providing affordable, ‘best-in-class’ industrial facilities for garment manufacturing, film and media production, and related services and industries.

“Made in New York is a growing fashion movement that will succeed with real backing—the kind that delivers secure jobs to factories and deliver reliable services to designers, and that integrates the disparate arms of the local industry into a more organized and reliable whole. The city’s commitment to preserving and growing our manufacturing capacity could be the game-changer we need,” said April Johnson, Founder of Alasdair.

Rising rents in Midtown Manhattan’s Garment District have forced some in New York’s creative industries to close shop. Mayor de Blasio hopes the transformation of two existing buildings within the complex to create 200,000 square feet of garment manufacturing space and a new 100,000 square-foot film and television production facility will provide ease of entry for new fashion and film startups, and an alternative workspace for existing firms.

“We have used our ‘Made in NY’ brand to grow fashion and film companies, and today, we’re committing some of our most important real estate assets to support them as well,” said Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Alicia Glen, in a statement. “These industries support hundreds of thousands of families with good wages, and they need affordable and modern space to grow. The ‘Made in NY’ Campus represents the collision of our creative economy and advanced manufacturing. This is going to be a 21st-century working waterfront that keeps our city the capital of film and fashion.”

Arch Paper notes that five percent (182,000) of the city’s jobs are in fashion, while the film industry employs 130,000. Average salaries in New York in both fashion and film industries are $57,000 and $53,000 respectively. “New York City has incredible manufacturing facilities, and it is exciting to see the Mayor and this Administration supporting its future. With this initiative, fashion manufacturing in the city has a new opportunity and a new home in which to flourish. I couldn’t be more pleased,” said Andrew Rosen, Founder and CEO of Theory, Inc.

The two buildings allocated for manufacturing will offer spaces ranging 2,000 to 20,000 square feet and will accommodate up to 35 tenants in the marking and grading, cutting and sewing, patternmaking, and sample-making business. The 100,000- square-fool film facility will be equipped with sound stages, shooting space, in addition to augmented reality and virtual reality facilities. The complex’s layout is meant to encourage collaboration with its many shared spaces and services. The complex will also allocate 7,500-square-foot to food retail.

New York City has committed $136 million towards the Made in New York complex, which will be designed by WXY.
